Northwestern University professor and poet Reginald Gibbons will give a reading from the Greek tragedy “Oedipus the King, ” working alongside a three-piece band from the music group Fulcrum Point, including Stephen Burns on trumpet. “It’s a collaboration really, ” says Gibbons. “There will be a percussionist, trumpeter (Burns) and an oud player, which is an ancient Middle Eastern stringed instrument. They have a really great oriental sound.” Taking place at 6pm at the National Hellenic Museum at 801 West Adams Street (4th floor), the reading will be from Gibbons’ new translations of “Sophocles, Selected Poems: Odes and Fragment.” “I don’t think there’s been a reading like this in Chicago ever before. I think that Sophocles is one of the greatest writers in history,” says Gibbons. “What I’m interested in is working back and forth across time between the present day and Sophocles’ time, from a poet’s perspective. It’s amazing what something from so long ago can tell us about our own lives.”
