National Library Week starts April 11, but the newly formed Chicago DeskSet is getting things rolling a day early. Founded in late February, the Chicago DeskSet is a committed group of librarians, bibliophiles and just about anyone interested in promoting literacy and social responsibility. “Our main goal is to create a grassroots organization that can both serve the city of Chicago and its libraries,“ says co-founder Anthony Molaro. “Not only are libraries in a tough economic situation, but the city of Chicago is as well.” For their first event, the DeskSet is having a book drive and social gathering at the Grafton, 4530 North Lincoln, at 3pm, April 10. “We’re hoping people drop off books and hang out and get to know each other a little bit,” says Molaro. “Mostly it will be an attempt for people with a common interest in social justice and social activism to get together.” Molaro also hopes people will take the opportunity to form “splinter groups” and spearhead efforts toward specific causes. The books from the event will be going to incarcerated youths, so while they are taking most books, target age should be considered. “We want to help them escape from the reality that they’re in,” says Molaro. Those interested in attending are recommended to RSVP through the Chicago DeskSet.com website or via Facebook. (Peter Cavanaugh)
